Washington
DC Business Leadership Network Meeting, Washington, DC
Approximately 50 attendees
COSD presented a short program covering the basics of working
with and preparing college students with disabilities for
career employment. In the audience were university personnel
representing career services and disability services and public
and private sector employers. Cynthia Crooks-Richardson of
George Washington University coordinated this event along
with Katherine McCary of SunTrust Bank. We ended up in a lively
discussion with many questions from this diverse audience. |

National Conference, San Diego, CA
Approximately 40 attendees
COSD was a part of panel in a Symposium entitled “Employment
Transition Strategies for Students with Disabilities.”
The other esteemed presenters were Mary Lee Vance of University
of Wisconsin Superior, Ronnie Porter of Northeastern University,
Jean Morrell of AAAS Entry Point! Program, Betsy Kravitz of
the Workforce Recruitment Program, Rachel Stewart of the California
Department of Health Services and Urban Miyares, San Diego
State University/Disabled Businesspersons Association. The
panel was moderated by Jean Ashmore of Rice University. We
divided the audience into small groups to discuss a number
of scenarios related to disclosure of a disability in an employment
situation. Each of the panel members had a brief time to discuss
their particular program and then there was further discussion
in a question and answer period. |

LeaderShape Institute, Allerton, IL
67 attendees
Alan Muir was invited to participate in the Guest Leader
Forum on the third night of a six day intensive leadership
training program for college students. Alan and two other
Guest Leaders were asked to speak to about 22 students each
about leadership and how our experiences related to the six
progressive steps of LeaderShape. Alan spoke extensively about
disability, leadership and employment for college students
with disabilities. The question and answer session was quite
lively and the students were quite insightful in their questions.
TheLeaderShape Institute, held every summer at sites in Illinois
and California, is an intensive, energizing, and unique six-day
educational experience designedto develop young adults to
lead with integrity. Nine different sessions of The LeaderShape
Institute were held during the summer of 2006. Each of the
nine sessions is comprised of approximately 60 young women
and men (17-25 years old) from diverse backgrounds sponsored
by various colleges, universities, and organizations across
the country.

Sarah Helm and Alan Muir presented the Disability Careers
Office at the University of Tennessee, as an example of collaboration
between Disability Services and Career Services for the benefit
of college students with disabilities involved in their career
search. This 75 minute presentation is available at the site
