Creation and Progress of COSD

As a result of the research visits, it became clear that the two diverse sectors of universities and employers have a common interest and a need to meet together to share ideas. The concept of a "loosely structured" consortium was developed to satisfy that need. It was also apparent that the employers had a number of questions and concerns about the recruiting and hiring of college graduates with disabilities. The universities are on the "front line" as the numbers of students with disabilities seeking postsecondary education are on the rise. The universities have the experience, exposure and expertise with this population. As those students graduate, the employers feel less prepared to appropriately respond to the needs of these potential employees and are requesting guidance from the universities. As the consortium was being formed, it was important to reflect the interests of Career Services, Disability Services and Employers to bring together all three pieces of the equation. This group is unique when compared to other national associations. AHEAD (Association of Higher Education and Disability) focuses on disability in academic settings and campus life, while NACE (National Association of Colleges and Employers) focuses on the Career Services professional on campus and recruiters and hiring managers of employers.
