Research

The goal of the research was to identify a "model" program that more effectively assists college students with disabilities in their career planning. In order to conduct research, Dr. Greenberg and Mr. Muir obtained a small grant for a period of six months from the State of Tennessee Division of Rehabilitation Services. Several major universities were identified as sources of information due to their established services to assist students with disabilities on campus. After visiting more than 20 campuses, it was determined that there were several highly effective components and modules that could be pieced together to create a comprehensive program. Concurrent with the university meetings, several of the largest employers in the vicinity were also visited. The rationale for meeting with employers was to identify initiatives corporations may be undertaking in the hiring and promotion of people with disabilities and to learn how to more effectively prepare students with disabilities, at the University of Tennessee, for recruitment by these employers. The overwhelming response from employers was recognition of the need to include disability in Diversity initiatives, but a concern over how to properly hire and interact with people with disabilities was expressed.
