N the Know

 

COSD is pleased to provide online training opportunities to learn more about the issues surrounding career employment for college students and recent graduates with disabilities.  N-the-Know is a series of seven one-hour live broadcast training sessions conducted by Alan Muir, Executive Director of COSD and Sarah Helm, Coordinator of the Disability Careers Office at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.  Each of the sessions provides in an in-depth view of an aspect of the career development of college students with disabilities.  For career services and disability services professionals, N-the-Know will put you "In the Know" to assist these students to be competitive in the career search. 

N-the-Know is video and audio streamed to your desktop computer and presentation materials will also be on screen.

Primer of Career Development of College Students with Disabilities - Alan Muir, Presenter - Thursday October 1, 2009 (Presented and in archive now)

Background on the issue of career employment of college students and recent graduates with disabilities, including a full description of COSD with the resources available and opportunities for partnership will be provided.


Collaboration Between Career Services and Disability Services - Sarah Helm, Presenter - Thursday October 22, 2009 (Presented and in archive now)

The potential roles of both the Disability Services and Career Services offices in providing specific career-related assistance to students with disabilities, as well as, best practices, strategies and possible solutions for successful collaboration in meeting the needs of college students with disabilities will be discussed.


N-the-Know with Dow: An Employer Spotlight - Tuesday January 26, 2010 (Presented and now in Archive) 

The presentation brings together three representatives of Dow to discuss the company's recruiting philosophy and programs to attract and hire qualified college graduates with disabilities.  It is a three-pronged strategy that has worked well.  The presentation will be dynamic with Rob Vallentine of Dow's North American Geographic Public Affairs discussing Dow's interaction with the community, Jeff Lichon discussing retention through the Disability Employment Network (DEN) - the Employee Resource Group for employees with disabilities and Kathy McCreedy of DiverseAbility discussing recruitment and internships.  Dow is a great example of how corporate recruiting can be successfully directed toward the population of college graduates with disabilities.

Disclosure, Self-Advocacy and Accommodations - Alan Muir and Sarah Helm, Presenters - Thursday February 18, 2010   
 
Examples will be provided of how students with disabilities can build self-advocacy and the skills needed for successful workplace disclosure including the differences between disclosure in higher education and employment .


Disclosure - Apparent vs. Non-Apparent Disabilities - Alan Muir and Sarah Helm, Presenters - Thursday March 11, 2010  

A comparison of the disclosure process for both apparent and non-apparent disabilities will be illustrated through case studies.


Career Development for Psychiatric Disabilities - Sarah Helm, Presenter - Thursday June 10, 2010

Information on disclosure considerations and workplace accommodation, specific to college students and recent graduates with psychiatric disabilities, will be discussed.


Experiential Education - Alan Muir and Sarah Helm, Presenters - Thursday August 12, 2010

Highlights of the unique benefits of Experiential Education for students with disabilities through programs such as COSD Career Gateway, Disability Mentoring Day, Emerging Leaders and the Workforce Recruitment Program will be presented.
